Physical Appearance and the Media
How is media changing our outlook on physical appearance? As a society, we are constantly surrounded by the media in multiple forms; television, billboards, magazines, internet and movies. When we look at all the agents of socialization, media is the most commonly associated with a person’s perception of beauty! Media surrounds us in our daily lives; it has a large impact on what we think of ourselves and others. Everyone has their own unique diverse personality and significant qualities, despite our uniqueness we all strive to look like the “hot” girl or “handsome” guy in the movies and magazines. Truly, no one ever meets the goal of looking 100% like the models in media that have been airbrushed over and over again, yet we always try hard to be what we are not. Guys want the skinny girls with big boobs and girls want the guys with six packs and strong muscles. Media has totally changed our perception on the opposite sex. People no longer look at what lies on the inside of a person; they only look at their physical appearance! Why is this? Why do we always strive harder to become someone we are not meant to be?
